Unveiling the Second World War Memorial - 3 March 1953

 
 

Grove Park was the setting for the dedication of the second memorial paying tribute to those who made the sacrifice during 1939 – 1945 conflict.

On Sunday (March 8) Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Lord Hylton performed the unveiling ceremony of the plaques bearing the names of 157 members of the H.M. Forces and 114 civilians, dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells, Dr H W Bradfield.

There were many attending who were present 30 years ago when the Marquis of Bath Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, unveiled the first memorial.

After drawing aside the Union Jack to unveil the memorial, Lord Hylton wearing the uniform of his rank said “I unveil this memorial in memory of the men and women of the Borough of Weston-super-Mare who gave their lives for their country in the years of war”.

 
 

The service was also attended by the Mayor Cllr, Alderman R.W. Brown and other dignitaries wearing their ceremonial robes for the first time, all armed forces, pre-service units, auxiliary services and ex-service personnel.

Relatives of the fallen were given a special place at the ceremony.

Also present were Sir Ian Orr-Ewing, M.P., and Lady Orr-Ewing, Mr J.E Ryall (Chief Constable of Somerset. The service was conducted by the Rev. G.W. Battersby rector of Weston. The Royal Marine buglers sounded the Last Post and Reveille.

A new memorial made of Portland stone was erected as so many names had to be placed on 9 bronze panels, surmounted by the Borough coat of arms, bearing the names of the fallen with 5 central ones being those belonging to the Armed Forces.
